Mamas Weekend Away – Mansion Hotel & Spa at Werribee Park

Things one gets to do when away on a mummy solo weekend trip to a beautiful semi rural historic boutique luxury hotel:

  • Wander around manicured stately lawns
  • Lose oneself in history
  • Lie on the bed for a bit and do nothing
  • Drink a coffee over a long period of time whilst gazing at said lawns.  There were little sparrows (!!) flitting around (I’m a massive bird nerd and sadly Sydney is bereft of sparrows,  probably due to the insidious Noisy Minors – not my favourite bird.  But I digress).
  • Sit at dinner with phone out and scroll through Instagram.
  • Have a bath and not have to think about anyone else’s bath.  Or dinner for that matter.
  • Do an uninterrupted meditation (I’ve found practicing in the school holidays more challenging ie there’s been no time).
Plus a lot more.   I’ve recently had a weekend at the divine Mansion Hotel & Spa at Werribee Park, about 30 minutes drive from Melbourne.
It’s an enormous old historic mansion (dating from the 1800s) reminiscent of Downtown Abby – complete with the gravelly drive up bit.   Inside the decor is beautiful, just what you would expect from a luxury boutique hotel.
I’ve been wanting to start writing travel posts for a while and since I had the opportunity to review the fabulous SFSC festival (here) I  thought I’d also take the opportunity to write my very first travel post.
I arrived at the Mansion greeted by super friendly staff who kindly gave me a map and pointed out all the things I could explore, all within walking distance.

These include:

A tour of the historic part of the mansion
The famous Victorian State Rose garden
Wine tasting at the Shadowfax Winery

I had a lovely wander around, with my trusty camera in tow and indulged in my love of photography.   The historic part of the mansion was really interesting, if not a bit creepy.  I find those “frozen in time” rooms fascinating but they give me the shudders a bit.  So interesting though to be reminded of how people lived.  The laundry area made me appreciate my modern washer dryer!!

After my walk, I  decided to treat myself and get a spa treatment.  I had a hydration facial and it was divine.  Jennifer my therapist was wonderful.  The products they use are Payot, a French brand that’s been around for ages but I’ve never tried.  Part of the facial involved a chilled collagen mask which was divine.  I’ve always wondered whether facials actually do anything but my skin looked really really good after.  So much so that I bought the oil cleanser she used (it was heavenly).

After I floated out of there, I had a bath and then a delicious 3 course meal in the restaurant Joseph’s.  The food was delicious – a lot of produce is either grown on site of sourced from nearby market gardens and as with all fresh food you could absolutely tell the difference.   I received fantastic friendly service from my English waitress.  I admitted I was starving when I arrived and she made sure to bring me extra bread rolls.

The next day I had a swim in the pool and a steam room followed by a delicious breakfast then headed off to the festival feeling wonderfully refreshed.

Being a hands on stay at home mum (my darling husband works very long hours) I don’t get a lot of time alone.  I feel it’s absolutely valuable for Mums (and Dads) to have some time to recharge their batteries.  It makes the world of difference to your spirit.  Having said that of course I missed my lil family like crazy, and was a bit regretful they couldn’t come (we had no one to look after Leo, our other baby dog).

There were heaps of kids around who all looked like they were having a great time in the pool etc .  There is also the Werribee Open Range Zoo literally next door which is almost like a wildlife sanctuary.   A gorgeous school friend mum Lisa who is from Melbourne told me her kids love going there  as its like being on safari.  I’m really into that vibe over the whole city zoo thing and would love take my son there one day.

My verdict is 100% love this hotel.  So great for a solo getaway, a family getaway, or even a girls weekend.

I’ve really enjoyed writing this post please do let me know if you liked it too as I’m keen to do more.

Until next time
